Partnership in Education and Character

This type of schooling is designed as a partnership between the parents and the teacher(s), and both have a part to play in order to achieve the maximum benefit of the approach for the student. It is important to recognize that we are working in partnership to disciple the student. A successful partnership, therefore, will include these elements from the two parties:

School:

Provides a Christian environment that is safe and conducive to learning;
Provides educational services to students including classroom instruction, assignments, tests, grading, projects, field trips, parties and standardized testing;
Seeks to provide counsel, direction and instruction on the relevance of academic subjects to the goal of discipleship and maturity in the Christian life.

Parent(s):

Provides a student that agrees to manifest Christian behavior, seeks to learn and be safe;
Directs student as he/she does work on days at home assuring that student spends adequate time on assignments; checks completion of assignments; supervises closely the progress of the student, and assists by answering questions as they are able.
Reinforces and builds on this instruction with prayer, church involvement, and parental discipleship and guidance.

To facilitate this we have implemented a Code of Conduct, Dress Code and Student Discipline Procedures (see below for each) designed to communicate clearly to families and students the school's expectations while students are at school or school-sponsored events. These policies will be administered from a character growth point of view, and not just a punishment point of view.

Student Code of Conduct

The purpose of the Student Code of Conduct is to promote a Christ-like attitude in Heritage Preparatory Academy's learning environment and to encourage the development of positive Christian relationships among its students. Virtues of Christian character such as respect for others and for God, love, obedience, and service will be strongly encouraged through our Code of Conduct and Character Development program. Discipline concerns will be brought to the parents' attention and principles of Christian communication and confidentiality will be maintained in all circumstances. Therefore, specific behavioral guidelines are important. This code applies to students on campus and during events sponsored by Heritage Prep. It also applies to those supporting Heritage Preparatory Academy students during extra-curricular competitions.

Students should show respect to adults at all times. An appropriate title (Mr., Mrs., Coach, etc.) should be used when a student is addressing an adult.
Students should treat others with respect, kindness, and compassion, as God commands us in Matthew 7:12: "So in everything do to others what you would have them do to you."
The school facility and grounds should be kept clean, orderly, and in a condition that shows an attitude of gratefulness.
There will be no running or rough housing between classes.
Use of profanity is prohibited.
Public displays of affection between sexes, such as hand holding, kissing, etc., are prohibited.
Students should not bring radios, tape players, tapes, CD players, CD's or any other electronic device (games) to school, unless specific permission is given by the school administrator.
The possession or use of tobacco products, illicit drugs, alcohol, or weapons is prohibited.
Students may carry pagers, cell phones, and other communication devices, but they must be turned off and stowed in bags, backpacks, etc., during class time and study halls.

Dress Code

Heritage Preparatory Academy's dress code is intended to give a concrete, practical witness to the school's commitment to fulfill its stated aims to honor God and disciple students. It is designed to encourage modesty, decency, and propriety and to discourage the use of clothing as a significant means of establishing self-identity or gaining attention or social status. (Matthew 6:28-34; I Peter 3:2-4; James 2:1-5).

The administration retains the authority, to determine the appropriateness of a given student's attire or hair style, and may remove from the campus or otherwise discipline any student deemed to be inappropriately dressed. The administration also reserves the right to grant a limited variance to these regulations for special purposes.

All elements of the dress code are in force (and may be enforced) on the Heritage Preparatory Academy campus from 8:00am to 4:00pm on school days. During that time, students anywhere on campus must be dressed in proper attire.

The uniform will consist of:

Interlock or Pique knit polo shirts . . . . . . . . red, navy, white, green, purple,yellow, orange, pink, black, blue, etc. (short or long sleeve)

Button down collar shirts . . . . . . . . . . . . . . white, blue, yellow, pink, stripes, denim etc.
(short or long sleeve)

Khaki, black (may be non-faded black jeans), or navy pants (all; including staff) Also, white, gray, olive, or brown are acceptable.

Khaki, black (may be non-faded black jeans), or navy capris (girls and female staff) Also, plaid, white, gray brown, olive or striped carpris.

Khaki, black, or navy shorts (no shorter than 2 inches above knee) (all; including staff) This will include plaid burmuda shorts. Also, white, brown and gray burmuda shorts.

Khaki, black, or navy skirts (no shorter than 2 inches above knee) (girls & female staff) Below the knee denim skirts, gray, white, plaid, striped, or brown are allowed.

Sweaters, vests, or cardigans . . . . . . . . . any solid, stripe, plaid, argyle, etc.

No flip flops or military shoes. All shoe strings must be tied

No blue jeans or denim shorts will be allowed.

Student Discipline Procedures

The Primary goal of the Heritage Preparatory Academy faculty and staff is to practice preventive discipline through good teaching techniques. Because Heritage Prep is a parent-based school, parents are responsible for dealing comprehensively with ongoing or serious discipline problems. If necessary, school officials will also employ mild forms of reproof, rebuke and correction in order to encourage cooperation. Under no circumstances will Heritage Prep practice corporal punishment. The school will control the impact of serious discipline problems by limiting or withdrawing the participation privileges of consistently uncooperative students.

The following General Discipline Policy Guidelines apply:

Teachers are given the authority to handle in the classroom any offense of a non-serious nature (hereafter "Routine Offense"). Classroom teachers may administer corrective action appropriate to the Routine Offense.

Students referred to the office for disciplinary action are to be accompanied by a Disciplinary Referral Form completed by a faculty or staff member.

Following any Routine Offense for which a student if referred to the office, the student shall be given an opportunity to correct his or her behavior. The student's parents shall not be notified, unless the student or school official involved specifically requests that they be notified.

Following subsequent Routine Offenses for which the student is referred to the office, the student's parents shall be notified. A copy of the relevant Disciplinary Referral Form shall be mailed to them for this purpose and the parents will be asked to sign and return the form, evidencing that they have read and understood it. The administrator shall have the authority to administer appropriate corrective action, which may include, but is not limited to, assigning a writing assignment to the student on biblical instruction as to the appropriate character trait(s).

The Academic Affairs Committee of the Board has the authority to suspend or expel a student for repeated Routine Offenses or for repeated violation of the Dress Code.

Any offense deemed to be of an urgent or potentially dangerous nature (hereafter, "Serious Offense") shall be brought immediately to the attention of the appropriate administrative staff member. When possible, the offending student shall be sent to the office with a Disciplinary Referral Form. The administrative staff member shall administer appropriate corrective action, which may include, but is not limited to, assigning a writing assignment to the student on biblical instruction as to the appropriate character trait(s). The parents shall be notified. A report of all Serious Offenses shall be forwarded to the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board, which may administer further and appropriate corrective action, including, but not limited to: suspension of the student from school for one or more days, suspension of the student from extra-curricular school activities, or expulsion.
